The City Slicker
This is the moment we picked up Todd in Colombo – back at the start of March 2020 – almost 100 miles north of our clinic. We were on the way home from a festival when we made a wrong turn, which actually worked out for the best as that’s how we came across this old boy!
He was collapsed in the middle of an incredibly busy main road, so we screeched to a halt and jumped out to help him. Janey and our operations manager Jono stepped in front of crazy Colombo traffic to carry him out of the road and check him over.
He was absolutely COVERED in ticks and clearly wasn’t very well – dehydrated, exhausted, and unable to stand for long. Checking with locals to make sure he wasn’t a pet and that it was okay to take him, we whisked him off down south to our clinic for treatment.
Back at the clinic, we set to work removing all his ticks and treating Todd for tick fever (while someone took care of trying to remove the hundreds of ticks from the car). We discovered Todd had testicular cancer and a severely enlarged, infected prostate. The infection was treated with antibiotics and the cancerous testicle and scrotum were removed.
Todd was pretty pissed off when he first got her but he’s now much happier, and is out of his kennel, chilling in our back garden with the other resident dogs. (Or, more accurately – ignoring them all and stealing the best bed…) We initially had every intention of dropping Todd home but he’s blind in one eye and too vulnerable, so – with the blessing of the Colombo locals we spoke to before his road trip – he’ll stay here with us unless we can find him a new home to live out his best old man life (we reckon he’s between 10 and 12 years old).
TODD, YOU’RE A BIT GRUMPY SOMETIMES BUT WE’RE OH SO HAPPY WE FOUND YOU!
