MEET PAPRIKA: The manic pixie dream girl

Having been run over and lost a leg at a young age, Paprika really learned to live life on her own terms. Near-death will do that to ya! This girl can’t be tied down (she ditched her adoptive owner to be a street dog again) and isn’t ready for a long-term relationship. She’s far too busy being platonically entwined with her boy besties, Hulk and Chance, spending her days kicking about the streets, pestering the WECare office staff for treats, and chewing everything in sight. Shoes, bag straps, door stops, curtains — nothing is safe from this gal’s gnashers. Kooky, free-spirited and Zooey Deschanel in dog form, she’s sweet with a side of spice; the perfect seasoning for life.

This little sweetheart will season your soul

D’ya fancy helping us provide for Paprika’s veterinary care, in exchange for pics and updates from her each quarter? She has a more active social life than all of us, so you can be sure her antics will be anything but dull!

PAPRIKA'S STORY

Paprika came into our lives at the end of May 2023 when she was brought to WECare by a tuk tuk driver who’d accidentally hit her with his vehicle. Sadly, road traffic accidents are super common here. She was only about eight months old, bless her and was in a loooooooot of pain, unable to walk on one of her back legs, and sporting some nasty wounds on her body.

X-rays showed she had quite a complicated hip dislocation, as well as bruised lungs — that’ll happen when you get hit by a tuk, eek! We gave her the good stuff (sweet sweet pain relief, baby!), cleaned and closed her wounds up, and tried and tried and TRIED to pop her joints back into place. Unfortunately, her skeletal system said a big fat “No” and we realised the best option for her was amputation of the dodgy leg.

That all went swimmingly and she was an absolutely golden patient! 10/10! About a month after coming in, she was all healed up and good to go, with her new tripod formation. The guy who’d brought her in told us he wanted to adopt her and take her to his house in the nearby village, so we were obviously like, “Hell yeah!

However, Paprika had other ideas and now spends most of her time roaming around in town with her new best mates, Chance and Hulk (who you can also sponsor!). Maybe she holds a grudge against the guy for accidentally hurting her, who knows?? Anyway, she looooooooves her boys, especially Hulk! Just like those two, she’s now a frequent visitor to our office in town, where she comes to collect her treats and quietly chill with us; she’s truly the most gentle, sweet soul. (Except for when she’s chewing our shoes — we learned the hard way to hide the Birkenstocks….!)

We’ve fallen head over heels for this three-legged queen; she’s such a silly little thing and a biiiiiiiiit of an airhead. We do worry about her near the busy traffic as her road sense isn’t the greatest, but that’s the way it is in Sri Lanka — these dogs love their freedom and she’s made it pretty clear she doesn’t want to be a house dog. We’ll keep an eye out for her and keep her healthy and happy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

By sponsoring one of our resident dogs, not only are you funding their cushty life at WECare, but you’re also supporting our life-saving work for the street dogs of Sri Lanka. Did someone say ‘value for money’?

  • WHAT DOES MY SPONSORSHIP MONEY PAY FOR?

Your monthly donation covers your sponsor dog’s food, shelter, vet care (including preventatives), and staffing, ensuring they’re happy, healthy and loved until they find their forever home. Winner!

  • WHAT DO I GET IN RETURN?

Look forward to quarterly updates from your sponsored pup, including cute pictures and news about what they’ve been up to. You’ll also get little surprises like exclusive digital wallpapers, Christmas cards, and WECare anniversary cards — WAY better than junk mail. Oh, and the best part? That warm, fuzzy feeling from knowing you’re doing your bit to change the lives of street dogs. Can’t beat that one.

  • WILL I BE MY DOG’S ONLY SPONSOR?

Nope, it takes a village to care for these pooches, and we think our dogs deserve more than one pen pal each after what they’ve been through. We don’t have individual bank accounts for each dog (IMAGINE what they’d spend it on…) so any leftover money goes towards WECare’s vital work for the street dogs of Sri Lanka.

  • WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE DOG I SPONSOR GETS ADOPTED?

As sad as it is to say goodbye, rehoming these adorable dogs is, of course, the goal. When that time comes we’ll be in touch to help you pick another absolute champ from the garden. (It’s hard to choose but don’t worry, we’ve got you.)

Welcome to Paprika's daily mayhem

Paprika is truly living the street dog dream — splitting her time between life on the street, hanging out with her guardians, and lounging in the Penthouse (AKA the WECare office we rent in town).

Mooching about with her boys Hulk and Chance, this three-legged beauty enjoys bakery breakfasts, casual exploring, and spending her days winding up the WECare office crew.
