MEET KAI: The boy who lived

'Kai, Kai, Kai.
We thought you might die.
But look at you now.
The apple of our eye(s).'

That's right, not just vets but po-ETS. But seriously, Kai cheated death and you'd better believe he is making the most of his second chance! He's firing on all cyclinders, demanding MAXIMUM cuddles, MAXIMUM attention, and MAXIMUM joy. In the words of Lahiru: "Maybe he'll never know that his name is Kai, but he'll know how many people at the hospital love him unconditionally". IS SOMEONE CUTTING ONIONS?

This boy isn't ignoring you, he just can't hear you

D’ya fancy helping us provide for Kai's veterinary care, in exchange for pics and updates from him each quarter? No? "Don't be ridiculous, Andrea — everybody wants this!"

KAI'S STORY

Kai was brought to us in a critical state in October 2023, at only eight weeks old. A tourist had noticed his litter and Kai stuck out like a sore thumb as his siblings were bright and bouncing around, while he was collapsed and not eating.

Poor old Kai had a hernia, was super lethargic, and vomiting undigested rice and water, which made us suspect he had an intestinal obstruction. This is where food and water can’t pass through the intestines, and it’s super serious — dogs can die if left untreated. X-rays confirmed that Kai had a blockage in his small intestine, which was causing a super gassy belly. We were in a bit of a pickle because putting him under anaesthetic in his poorly state was super risky, but if we didn’t operate then there was a high chance he’d die anyway.

We made the decision to take him to surgery, and we’re sure glad we did. Despite some hairy moments, the team pulled him through the op (thank GOODNESS for nurses!) and we managed to repair Kai’s hernia and untwist his small intestine. However, that wasn’t the end of the road as Kai took a reeeeeally long time coming round from anaesthesia and there was still a risk he might die suddenly.

The next morning, Kai was standing up and wagging his tail, and even ate two bowls of food, the hungry lad! However, he began deteriorating throughout the day and we were really worried. By lunchtime he was flat, refusing food, and looking bloated. An ultrasound showed some bloat and not much peristalsis, which explained why poor Kai hadn’t pooed since that morning.

To our utter relief, Kai gradually started getting better and better! Over the course of two weeks he got progressively brighter until…disaster struck. He got really quiet and started behaving really weirdly, suddenly acquiring a head tit. We couldn’t figure out what was going on, and were concerned that he was now blind and deaf.

Long story short, he’s not blind but he IS deaf, which — despite being otherwise healthy — means he’s a lot harder to adopt out. Kai needs a really special home, and as we haven’t been able to find one yet, he’s been living with us, ‘cos we’re cool like that. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

By sponsoring one of our resident dogs, not only are you funding their cushty life at WECare, but you’re also supporting our life-saving work for the street dogs of Sri Lanka. Did someone say ‘value for money’?

  • WHAT DOES MY SPONSORSHIP MONEY PAY FOR?

Your monthly donation covers your sponsor dog’s food, shelter, vet care (including preventatives), and staffing, ensuring they’re happy, healthy and loved until they find their forever home. Winner!

  • WHAT DO I GET IN RETURN?

Look forward to quarterly updates from your sponsored pup, including cute pictures and news about what they’ve been up to. You’ll also get little surprises like exclusive digital wallpapers, Christmas cards, and WECare anniversary cards — WAY better than junk mail. Oh, and the best part? That warm, fuzzy feeling from knowing you’re doing your bit to change the lives of street dogs. Can’t beat that one.

  • WILL I BE MY DOG’S ONLY SPONSOR?

Nope, it takes a village to care for these pooches, and we think our dogs deserve more than one pen pal each after what they’ve been through. We don’t have individual bank accounts for each dog (IMAGINE what they’d spend it on…) so any leftover money goes towards WECare’s vital work for the street dogs of Sri Lanka.

  • WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE DOG I SPONSOR GETS ADOPTED?

As sad as it is to say goodbye, rehoming these adorable dogs is, of course, the goal. When that time comes we’ll be in touch to help you pick another absolute champ from the garden. (It’s hard to choose but don’t worry, we’ve got you.)

Welcome to Kai's daily mayhem

Kai might not be able to hear when his breakfast is coming but his other senses are alive and kicking 'cos this boy KNOWS when his human besties are bringing his scran. Once he's done hoovering food, he's ON ONE. This boy has so much energy, we wish we could get a little boost from sniffing his fur. He spends his day exploring, sniffing, playing with his mates, saying hi to his neighbours, pulling on the lead during walkies, and hypnotising us humans with his ADORABLE head tilt.
