MEET Jake: The food thief

Jake acts like the big man, barking his head off at strangers who dare to enter his garden, but we’ve discovered his kryptonite. FOOD. It’s a surefire way to win his love and break through to his playful, charming interior. He’d definitely suggest hanging outside a roti shop for the first date. However, be aware that just like Joey from Friends, he doesn’t share food. Unless ‘sharing’ means stealing your food — go near him with a treat in your pocket and it’ll be snatched in seconds. Oh, and if you’re a bird? Run. For. Your. Life. This stealthy hunter will pounce when you least expect it, baby. You have been warned.

This boy will trade trust for roti

D’ya fancy helping us provide for Jake’s veterinary care, in exchange for pics and updates from him each quarter? He told us that we should post a thank you roti to each new sponsor but...no.

JAKE'S STORY

Jake arrived at WECare as just a tiny 10 week old puppy, and he’d lost half of his leg in a road traffic accident.

He’d been scooped up by some lovely people who lived locally to the clinic – they’d been looking after him at their home, until they realised he needed further help. Apparently, Jake had been eating and drinking well (that’s our boy!), and even hopping around using his good back leg. What a little trooper we had on our hands.

There was no saving his bad leg, so we got rid of the dead tissue on the stump and dressed it, before his amputation a few days later. Unfortunately, the people who found him weren’t able to adopt Jake after his recovery, so he moved in with us. Little Jake healed like an absolute DREAM after surgery, and was hopping around our garden in no time.

We attempted to rehome him whilst he was still a small cute puppy, but he came off his isolation protocols (i.e. safe to be adopted) in December 2020. At that time we were still limited by the coronavirus lockdowns, event restrictions and the like – so we couldn’t host adoption drives. We called around to everyone we knew, but had no joy.

Jake’s such a lovely boy, who can be a wee bit shy at first, but once won over you’ve got a proper bestie for life with this one. He’s playful and chilled with other dogs as far as we know, and also LOVES a walk and playtime with humans too.

With a loving home, we’re confident Jake will flourish and thrive! Until we find that perfect home (he’s available for international adoption btw), we need to keep him housed, fed and up-to-date on vaccines and medication – which costs us a pretty penny, so sponsoring Jake will help us with this.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

By sponsoring one of our resident dogs, not only are you funding their cushty life at WECare, but you’re also supporting our life-saving work for the street dogs of Sri Lanka. Did someone say ‘value for money’?

  • WHAT DOES MY SPONSORSHIP MONEY PAY FOR?

Your monthly donation covers your sponsor dog’s food, shelter, vet care (including preventatives), and staffing, ensuring they’re happy, healthy and loved until they find their forever home. Winner!

  • WHAT DO I GET IN RETURN?

Look forward to quarterly updates from your sponsored pup, including cute pictures and news about what they’ve been up to. You’ll also get little surprises like exclusive digital wallpapers, Christmas cards, and WECare anniversary cards — WAY better than junk mail. Oh, and the best part? That warm, fuzzy feeling from knowing you’re doing your bit to change the lives of street dogs. Can’t beat that one.

  • WILL I BE MY DOG’S ONLY SPONSOR?

Nope, it takes a village to care for these pooches, and we think our dogs deserve more than one pen pal each after what they’ve been through. We don’t have individual bank accounts for each dog (IMAGINE what they’d spend it on…) so any leftover money goes towards WECare’s vital work for the street dogs of Sri Lanka.

  • WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE DOG I SPONSOR GETS ADOPTED?

As sad as it is to say goodbye, rehoming these adorable dogs is, of course, the goal. When that time comes we’ll be in touch to help you pick another absolute champ from the garden. (It’s hard to choose but don’t worry, we’ve got you.)

Welcome to Jake's daily mayhem

Jake spends his nights dreaming of playing with his mates, and he gets to make that dream a reality every single morning. (Perhaps he should start a motivational podcast? Stephen BARKlett, eat your heart out. Ahem.) Anyway, when he's not racing around with his roomies, he's hustling for treats, being taken for a walk, or barking at strange humans and beasts.

Of course, every aspiring CEO knows that rest is important — you can't hustle all the time. That's why Jake spends a good portion of his day sleeping in the sun and recharging his batteries. Smart boy.
