MEET Erika: The porcelain princess

Grace, elegance and a pinch of sass — Erika looks like butter wouldn’t melt, but don’t be fooled. Her motto? You can look, but you probably shouldn’t touch. Break the rules and you might get snapped at. Fair warning.

She rocked up in 2023 after being hit by a vehicle, with a serious leg injury and her siblings sadly gone. One emergency amputation later and she was trotting around on three legs like nothing ever happened. Resilient doesn’t quite cover it.

She even got adopted at one point (go Erika!)… only to be returned less than 24 hours later for starting scraps with the other dogs. Since then, she’s been ruling the clinic garden like the tiny queen she is.

Sure, she’s got opinions — and she’s not afraid to share them — but once you earn her trust, she’s got a loyal side too. Just don’t expect cuddles on demand.

This girl’s running the show on her terms.

D’ya fancy helping us provide for Erika’s veterinary care, in exchange for pics and updates from her each quarter? She's a right little firecracker, so there'll always be some tea.

ERIKA'S STORY

Erika the street pup rocked up in 2023 after getting injured in a road traffic accident. We found her at the side of the road with a serious leg injury, lying next to her siblings who had sadly passed away.

Rushing her back to the hospital, we ended up having to amputate one of her back legs, but she’s adapted to tripod life like a little trooper after being nursed back to health by our staff. FYI, she was named Erika by our VCA, Pasindu (after a sassy Marvel character, naturally).

Now, we prefer to put dogs back on the street as it’s the most sustainable solution to the ole street dog issue, but that wasn’t appropriate in Erika’s case.

Why? ‘cos she was a pup when she came in, so didn’t have the opportunity to finish her How to be a Street Dog diploma. So, she enrolled in our WECare resident dog programme, moving into the clinic garden while she awaited adoption.

She’d barely had a chance to unpack her things and start a ‘my new home’ Pinterest board before she was adopted by a mate of one of our staff members — wahoo! However, sadly the excitement was short-lived as she was returned less than 24 hours later for…getting into brawls with other dogs. FFS Erika! Sadly, she’s been in the garden ever since, playing a tiny violin while she waits to be chosen for her forever home.

We’ve got to know Erika pretty well and hiding beneath her cute and innocent face is a VERY feisty attitude; this girl knows how to show the other dogs who’s boss. (“It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me.”) However, we LOVE her sass and strong personality, and let’s be real — who of us isn’t a little Jekyll and Hyde?!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

By sponsoring one of our resident dogs, not only are you funding their cushty life at WECare, but you’re also supporting our life-saving work for the street dogs of Sri Lanka. Did someone say ‘value for money’?

  • WHAT DOES MY SPONSORSHIP MONEY PAY FOR?

Your monthly donation covers your sponsor dog’s food, shelter, vet care (including preventatives), and staffing, ensuring they’re happy, healthy and loved until they find their forever home. Winner!

  • WHAT DO I GET IN RETURN?

Look forward to quarterly updates from your sponsored pup, including cute pictures and news about what they’ve been up to. You’ll also get little surprises like exclusive digital wallpapers, Christmas cards, and WECare anniversary cards — WAY better than junk mail. Oh, and the best part? That warm, fuzzy feeling from knowing you’re doing your bit to change the lives of street dogs. Can’t beat that one.

  • WILL I BE MY DOG’S ONLY SPONSOR?

Nope, it takes a village to care for these pooches, and we think our dogs deserve more than one pen pal each after what they’ve been through. We don’t have individual bank accounts for each dog (IMAGINE what they’d spend it on…) so any leftover money goes towards WECare’s vital work for the street dogs of Sri Lanka.

  • WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE DOG I SPONSOR GETS ADOPTED?

As sad as it is to say goodbye, rehoming these adorable dogs is, of course, the goal. When that time comes we’ll be in touch to help you pick another absolute champ from the garden. (It’s hard to choose but don’t worry, we’ve got you.)

Welcome to Erika's daily mayhem

Erika’s morning involves having a biiiiiiiiiig stretch and a play, before waiting impatiently for the humans to come bring her her breakfast, which she wolfs down before any of her pals can steal it. Then it’s time for a snooze (tough life not having a job!), a playful spar with her garden mates, or a hunt for monitor lizards to have a go at.

She’s also partial to a cuddle and cajoling treats out of the WECare team. She knows what she’s doing, this one.
