If you’re looking for loyalty, Chance is your man — you just have to look at his friendships with his besties to see that. Paprika and Hulk are his ride or dies and he’s the kingpin of that crew, without a doubt. This boy will keep you safe, with a survival instinct like no other — just look at how he dragged himself to WECare after being burnt all over his body. He’s a fighter, baby! When Chance knows what he wants he’ll go to any lengths to get it (namely barking in your face until you succumb and give him a treat). He also knows what he doesn’t want, deftly removing Bravecto from any foodstuff it’s hidden in. Smart, strong and handsome? Now that’s why you’ll fall for the leader of the pack.
D’ya fancy helping us provide for Chance’s veterinary care, in exchange for pics and updates from him each quarter? He has a 5-star Uber rating, if that sways you?
Sponsor ChanceWe met Chance in May 2018 when we spotted something unusual on the CCTV at the WECare hospital. Heading outside to check it out, we found an incredibly sad dog cowering behind the bins, who was absolutely covered in horrendous burns, from his head right down to his (very cute) butt.
We’ll never know exactly what happened to him but we suspect it was a hot water burn, which could have happened as a result of someone trying to shoo him away. (We used to see a lot of these but thankfully they’re happening less frequently these days.)
Luckily, he didn’t end up needing surgery, but it did take around three months of wound and pain management, endless love, and infinite patience to transform this boy. As his wounds began to heal, his huge personality started to show, and he went from being the most subdued, depressed little soul to becoming one of the biggest characters we’ve ever met. If there was an award for most mischievous patient, Chancey boy would win gold, we tell ya. After months of being given medicine, he got avoiding drugs down to an art! #straightedge.
However, once he was all better, there was one little problem — we didn’t know where to return him. We put dogs back on the street wherever possible (if that sounds bonkers, read why here) but because Chance was found outside the hospital and wasn’t a known neighbourhood dog, we were stumped. The decision was taken out of our hands when we were driving him down to the beach for walkies one day and he suddenly jumped off the scooter and fled into the sunset. We didn’t see him for WEEKS until we finally spotted him! He’d only bloody gone and moved himself into a house in the village, managing to adopt himself some human guardians who absolutely loved him to bits. Classic Chance.
This cheeky chap has lived there ever since and we see him alllllll the time, especially since we set up an office opposite the village bakery AKA the street dog social club. Now we get daily visits from Chance and his besties, Paprika and Hulk (who you can also sponsor!), who hang out with us for most of the day.
His love of us is handy as it means we can keep a close eye on him — a couple of years ago he needed surgery for a dislocated elbow after a suspected RTA. Unfortunately, his leg started playing up again recently and despite trying everything in our arsenal, it was starting to cause him a LOT of pain. So, the kindest thing was to amputate it, and he’s been SO much happier as a pain-free tripod!
Chance is the most playful, bright, happy boy — an absolute world away from the sad little sausage we met back in 2018. He’s wormed his way firmly into our hearts, his guardian’s hearts and now….YOUR heart?
By sponsoring one of our resident dogs, not only are you funding their cushty life at WECare, but you’re also supporting our life-saving work for the street dogs of Sri Lanka. Did someone say ‘value for money’?
Chance is truly living the street dog dream — living a hybrid life between the street, his guardians, and the Penthouse AKA the WECare office space that we rent in town. (Chance actually has multiple guardians, like the canine version of Six Dinner Sid.)
Mooching about with his besties Hulk and Paprika, this handsome lad enjoys meals at the bakery, exploring, and spending his days chilling with the WECare office staff.
