As vets, our focus is very much on the level of care we provide. As animal lovers, we also combine our skills with lots of love and compassion to create not only a life-saving, but a cuddle-filled experience for our patients. We have a 24 hour, fully-equipped hospital on the south coast of Sri Lanka, dedicated to providing healthcare to those with no one else to look after them. We are confronted by extremely advanced illnesses and injuries every day and this facility is vital in our aim of bringing a higher standard of veterinary care to the street dog population.
Every day we see unimaginable suffering caused by injuries and diseases that would shock even the most experienced of vets - it’s truly the stuff of nightmares. We’re constantly inspired by the resilience of street animals, honouring their strength by giving our all to each and every case.
Back in 2014, Janey would cruise the streets in a tuk tuk, looking for poorly dogs and treating them at the side of the road or in her tiny home.
These days with a hospital fit to bursting with inpatients, our team relies on the local community (and tourists) to alert us to dogs in need.
With extremely limited resources, it's helpful if animals are brought to us. However, we can also go and fetch them (and treat on the spot where possible).
Dogs across the world face different issues, and those encountered in Sri Lanka are nothing short of traumatic. Fortunately, a lot of the ailments are treatable - even the ones that don't look it. We're pretty amazed on a daily basis - either we're really good vets or Sri Lankan dogs have magical healing properties... we think maybe the latter...!
Our WECare hospital is the only 24-hour inpatient veterinary facility outside of Colombo.
We're incredibly fortunate to have access to advanced diagnostic equipment and veterinary-specific medicines, allowing us to treat promptly and effectively.
Street dogs will always be our priority but we believe that pet dogs in Sri Lanka deserve high standard veterinary care too.
Pet owners can book a consultation with one of our vets. Prices are heavily subsidised to encourage responsible animal ownership, although donations towards care are encouraged wherever possible.
Locals often can’t afford to take community dogs to the vets, so we’re here to provide free veterinary care for them and support our community in caring for the dogs under their guardianship. There's a lot of teamwork required - all we ask is for people to alert us when they see a dog in need.
Our hospital is one of very few inpatient facilities in the country which means we’re often extremely busy. We’re the only fully-equipped veterinary hospital outside of Colombo and pride ourselves on offering one of the best veterinary services on the island. This doesn’t make us complacent – as in any field, there’s always room for improvement and we’re constantly striving to get better and better.
